What a tradingbot actually is.
A trading bot is a configuration you activate — nothing more mysterious than that.
You define a market, an allocation, the conditions that constitute an entry, and the risk levels that govern the exit. Once active, the bot evaluates live market data against those conditions, places orders through your exchange connection when they are met, and manages the resulting position until an exit condition triggers or you intervene.
What it removes is execution latency, inconsistency, and the small discretionary edits that quietly turn a written strategy into a different one. What it does not remove is market risk — a bot will execute a poorly-conceived strategy with perfect discipline.
Six states,start to finish.
Every automated system moves through the same sequence. Each state is visible in the interface, and each one is yours to change.
- 01
Configure
Set market, capital allocation, entry logic and risk parameters.
- 02
Activate
The bot moves to a live state and begins evaluating conditions.
- 03
Monitor
Status, entry, current price and unrealised P&L update continuously.
- 04
Execute
Orders are placed against your connected exchange account.
- 05
Manage
Adjust risk levels, pause or reallocate while the bot runs.
- 06
Exit
Positions close on target, stop or manual intervention.

Everything setbefore anything runs.
A bot only acts on parameters you can see. Nothing executes until you activate it, and every field remains editable while it runs.
- MarketThe pair the bot trades, on your connected exchange.
- AllocationHow much capital this system is allowed to deploy.
- Entry logicThe conditions that constitute a valid entry.
- Risk levelsStop loss, take profit and optional trailing.
Nothing executes until you activate. Review every parameter first.
What happenswhen a condition fires.
Seven stages sit between a price change and an open position — including a risk check that runs before any order is constructed.
- 01
Market
Live price, order-book depth and recent trades stream in from the venue you have connected, normalised into one feed every later stage reads from.
- Order book depth
- Last traded price
- Rolling volume
- 02
Signal
Your configured conditions are evaluated against that feed as it updates. Nothing proceeds until every condition you set is satisfied at the same moment.
- Indicator state
- Entry conditions
- Cooldown window
- 03
Risk check
Before anything reaches an exchange the intended trade is measured against your allocation, current exposure and stop parameters. Breach any one and it is dropped.
- Capital allocation
- Open exposure
- Stop distance
- 04
Order
An order is constructed with the size, type and price your configuration implies — limit or market, sized to the allocation the risk check approved.
- Order type
- Position size
- Limit price
- 05
Exchange
The order is routed to the venue over your own API connection. Keys stay scoped to trading, so withdrawal permissions are never required.
- Signed request
- Trade-only keys
- Acknowledgement
- 06
Position
Fills return and are reconciled into an open position. Partial fills are folded in, so entry price and quantity reflect what actually executed.
- Partial fills
- Average entry
- Fees applied
- 07
Monitoring
The open position is tracked against your exit conditions — target, stop or a manual close — with unrealised P&L updating continuously until it is closed.
- Unrealised P&L
- Target and stop
- Exit trigger
The position, andeverything around it.
Entry, current price, unrealised P&L, size and the risk levels the bot is working to — on one screen, updating continuously.

Three parameters,three different jobs.
Most configuration mistakes come from asking one of these to do another's work.
- Stop loss
Where the idea is wrong
A stop states how much of your capital this position may cost. Place it where the reason for the trade no longer holds, then size the position so that distance is an acceptable loss. Sizing follows stop placement, never the reverse.
In a gap or a thin book the fill can be worse than the level you set.
- Take profit
Where the idea is finished
A fixed target makes the reward-to-risk ratio explicit before the bot is live, and it is the easiest exit to evaluate afterwards. Its cost is the occasional move that runs far past the target.
A fixed exit will never capture the tail of an extended move.
- Trailing stop
A floor that ratchets
Trailing replaces a fixed target with a moving floor that follows the running high and never steps back down. It trades exit certainty for participation in extended moves.
In a range-bound market, trailing often underperforms a fixed target.
Automation is notthe same as absence.
Handing execution to software does not hand over responsibility. Four things stay entirely yours — and they are the four that determine the outcome.
- 01Strategy selectionWhat conditions you believe are worth acting on, and why.
- 02Capital allocationHow much is exposed to any one system, and what happens to the rest.
- 03Risk parametersWhere the stop sits, what the target is, whether trailing protects or strangles.
- 04The decision to keep runningKnowing when a drawdown is normal variance and when the configuration no longer fits the market.
Review executionand strategyseparately.
Fidelity — did the bot do what you configured — can be answered weekly from the order log. Whether the strategy is sound needs many more trades than that.
Chart shows an illustrative equity index, not actual or expected results. Drawdown is a normal property of any strategy — reviewing it matters more than reviewing returns.
Configure yourfirst bot.
Set the rules, activate with a small allocation, and watch how it behaves before scaling.
Trading carries risk and you may lose capital. Automation does not remove market risk. Nothing here is investment advice.
